On a recent site visit for a hospital in Miami, we encountered a fully custom job — a massive air handling unit (AHU-1) with six huge, chilled water coils. An aging unit with many rusty connections, the system was in major need of refurbishing.

During our assessment of the unit, we determined that upgrading to larger chilled water coils was necessary. While on site, we took precise measurements to ensure the replacement coils could be accurately fabricated and restore the system to peak performance. What is a Chilled Water coil?

A chilled water coil is a heat-exchange component used in HVAC systems to cool and dehumidify air. It usually consisting of 4–12 rows of tubes that pass through sheets of formed fins bonded through tube expansion with entering water temperatures ranging from 40˚-55˚.

How it works

• Chilled water flows through a network of tubes inside the coil
• Warm air passes over the outside of those tubes
• Heat transfers from the air to the water
• The air leaves cooler and often drier
