Understanding Tube Bundles

In commercial HVAC systems, a tube bundle is the core heat transfer component inside a shell and tube heat exchanger — or sometimes a chiller or condenser. It consists of a series of metal tubes—arranged in a bundle—that allow heat to be exchanged between two fluids without the fluids mixing. This process is essential for chillers, condensers, boilers and other HVAC equipment to regulate building temperature efficiently.

Over time, tube bundles can foul, corrode or scale, reducing system efficiency. In HVAC systems, these bundles are often removable so they can be cleaned, retubed or replaced without replacing the entire heat exchanger.
